You Are Called To Be A Light In The Darkness

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to drift with the current of the world?

Fear spreads pretty quickly. Distractions multiply. The pressures of everyday life can slowly pull our eyes away from Jesus.

If we’re not careful, we can find ourselves moving with the current, even when that current is not leading us towards God.

Maybe the news is frightening, or perhaps you have too much on your mind and feel like you’re running on empty.

But how can you be a light in the darkness if you’re running on empty?

The Bible says in Matthew 5:14: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

But how can you be that light—or that city on a hill—when your focus is consumed by the problems and distractions this world offers?

Here are three ways you can become the light God has called you to be in a dark world.

Fill yourself up with the Word of God daily

Filling yourself with God’s Word—the Bible—is not something that should only happen on Sundays. You should fill yourself with it daily, the same way you would eagerly sit down to enjoy your favorite home-cooked meal.

Scripture tells us to keep God’s Word close to our hearts. Proverbs 3:3 and Proverbs 6:21 speak of binding His teachings around your neck and writing them on your heart.

I remember reading these verses as a teenager and trying to imagine what it would actually be like to wear understanding as a necklace.

It would mean never taking it off, no matter what I went through

It would mean continually leaning on God’s understanding in every circumstance, even when I didn’t understand what He was doing (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Scripture doesn’t tell us to keep God’s Word tucked away in our back pocket and pull it out only when we need it. Instead, it calls us to keep it before us, allowing it to lead and guide us in every situation.

Deuteronomy 6:6 and 11:18 emphasize the importance of internalizing God’s Word.

We are not merely called to read Scripture. We are called to treasure it, live by it, and allow it to shape our thoughts and actions.

One way we do this is by meditating on God’s Word day and night (Psalm 1:2).

Meditation is more than reading a passage and moving on. It is taking time to reflect on what you’ve read, allowing God’s truth to sink deeply into your heart.

When you do this, you become so filled with God’s Word that when challenges arise, you naturally respond from a biblical perspective.

When you fill yourself with God’s Word daily, your perspective begins to change. Your thoughts become aligned with His truth. Your posture shifts from fear to faith. Your responses become rooted in peace, rather than panic.

You begin to walk differently, because you are no longer being led by the world around you, but by the Word that is within you.

Once the Word is in your heart, it eventually comes out of your mouth. Once you begin filling yourself with God’s truth, the next step is speaking that truth.

Speak the Word

The Word of God is alive and powerful. It brings forth transformation.

It shifts perspectives and strengthens faith. It sets things into motion and changes atmospheres.

Jeremiah 1:12 reminds us that God watches over His Word and is faithful to accomplish His purposes through it. His Word never returns void and always accomplishes what He intends.

Rather than allowing negative circumstances to steal your joy or dictate your outlook, speak God’s truth over your situation.

In Ezekiel 37, God instructed Ezekiel to prophesy to dry bones, and what appeared dead came to life.

God lives within us, and through faith He allows us to bring truth into situations that feel lifeless, hopeless, or broken.

Today’s world is filled with anxiety, depression, shame, unbelief, and hopelessness.

It is time for believers to take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and speak truth.

Where there is anxiety, speak peace.

Where there is depression, speak hope.

Where there is shame, speak grace.

Where there is unbelief, speak faith.

Where there is hopelessness, speak expectancy.

Invite the Holy Spirit

Walking with the Holy Spirit is essential because, Jesus tells us in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit teaches us and helps us understand God’s truth.

After we receive God’s Word, we need the Holy Spirit to help transform our minds and apply that truth to our daily lives.

We also need His guidance to discern where and how we are called to shine the light of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom to know what to say, when to say it, and how to respond according to God’s will.

As believers, we are bearers of truth.

Truth naturally illuminates darkness.

When you enter a dark place, you have the opportunity to bring the light of Christ with you. You can leave that place better than you found it because, God’s presence goes with you.

Guard your thoughts and your words, so that you can be the light someone else needs during a difficult season.

So I ask you:

What are you filling yourself with today?

The news?

Social media?

Fear?

Distractions?

Or are you filling yourself with the living Word of God?

The world does not need more people drifting with the current.

It needs believers who are anchored in truth, led by the Holy Spirit, and shining brightly for Jesus.

As Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12

May we be women who keep our lamps burning, our hearts surrendered, and our eyes fixed on Jesus.
